ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court rejected a report over illegal appointments in Port Qasim Authority (PQA) on Monday and directed the government to make regulations to run its affairs. A three-member bench consisting of Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Tassaduq Jillani and Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed was hearing a petition filed by Ports and Shipping ministry’s dysfunctional secretary Abdul Jabbar Memon that challenged the appointment of Mehmood Zameer Farooqi, brother-in-law of Commerce Minister Amin Fahim, in PQA.
PQA counsel Shaiq Usmani presented a report over the appointments that the court termed dissatisfactory and directed that the appointment of Abdul Jabbar Memon should be reviewed and a report must be submitted to the court within four weeks. Justice Javed Iqbal observed that the PQA was established in 1973 but rules had not been framed up till now. He said the court must be informed that under which law PQA was functioning and under which rules the appointments were made.
He noted that three people of the same home were appointed in grade-15 in PQA and just after 15 days of their appointments, they were promoted to Grade 20. Later, the court adjourned the hearing for four weeks.
