FAISALABAD – The centuries-old method of tracking down offenders with the help of their footprints found at the scenes of crimes is valid even today to catch dacoit gangs provided footprint experts are ensured security by the police,” say the two renowned Khojis (footprint experts) of Faisalabad.
“We can trace the notorious gangs involved in serious crimes if we have police protection,” said Mashooq Ali from Chak No. 83 JB and Atta Muhammad from Chak No 246 RB in their joint statement. “We have saved in our minds the record of Khura (footprint) of all the gangsters of the area,” said the pair. “This leads to a grave risk to our lives from these gangs who threat Khojis not to name them in the crimes,” said the duo.
“It is ironical that police very often take our services for a particular incident, but we are neither provided with fees nor transportd. “Instead, we are at a constant risk of life from the gangsters for revealing their names,” they said. “In the past, the Khojis were on the payrolls of police and their expertise led to resolve many complex cases,” said Mashooq Ali.
“The services of the late Muhammad Hussain Khoji were hired by Faisalabad police but after his death they have not contracted any one in his place,” said Khoji Atta Muhammad. “We, as khojis, have a plenty of information about the glaring incidents but due to security threats from the gangs we are forced to bury the matters in our bosoms like police personnel,” they admitted.
They said the innate ability to read the Khura (footprint) is an instinctive technique gifted by Allah. They claimed that khojis could discover the blind murder cases and other big crimes. They said if the government paid them reasonable fees and provide facilities, they could prove more useful than police investigators.
