LAHORE – The Punjab University (PU) Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT) tried to organise an illegal function at the varsity’s New Campus without permission of the university administration, which expressed concern over participation of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leaders Hafiz Salman Butt and Farid Paracha in the function, Pakistan Today has learnt. PU IJT nazim Zubair Safdar said that the varsity administration tried to stop their constructive activity and also thrashed their workers. He said that the IJT had taken permission from the administration to arrange the function but it is a tragedy that the administration tried to stop the event in presence of guests.
Students were seen in an uncomfortable position when faculty members tried to stop them, on which administrative officers and senior professors reached the spot and tried to convince students not to disturb the varsity’s peaceful environment. IJT activists not only misbehaved with senior teachers and administrative officers but also abused and pushed them to go away. Such insulting behaviour towards teachers was never seen before in the varsity’s history.
The varsity administration have resolved that peaceful academic environment and respect of teachers and administrative officers would be ensured and no student organisation would be allowed to violate rules and regulations and high values and traditions of the oldest and largest seat of higher learning in Pakistan.
According to the university administration, participation of political leaders negatively affects the peaceful academic environment of the campus. The university administration hopes that politicians would avoid participation in such functions without prior information of the university administration. Both Salman and Paracha participated in the function without permission of the university administration in the varsity’s academic block without any prior information to the administration, which would have received them with full respect and explained the factual position.
