HRM: does it matter?

Human Resource Management (HRM) is a term that was not so much familiar a few years back in Pakistan as it is now in these days. HRM revealed its importance in the world in1950s when Japanese used it as a strategic resource. Over the last few years, human resources have been valued as an integral part of any business in Pakistan.

Most companies are establishing their HRM departments because they realise its important. Now companies are heavily dependent on the contribution of their human resources in terms of achieving their organisational goals, objectives, programs and activities that enable enterprises to maximise their workforce productivity.

Scope of HRM in Pakistan is very bright. Operationally it has become very strong as almost every organisation is following the basic practices of HRM. However, from a global perspective we are still at a primary stage.

There are some hurdles to implement HRM policies because of the management favouritism and nepotism. The core functions of HRM i.e., recruitment and selection, training and development and performance appraisal, cannot be implemented due to such impediments. Lack of coordination is yet another factor. Economies and businesses all over the world are facing new trends of globalisation and free market. HRM in Pakistan was adopted in response to these challenges and to speed up the pace of economic and business activities.

However, HRM is failing to do so. The concept of HRM is still in its preliminary phase in Pakistan and in small business it is almost nonexistent.

Online recruitment technique is relatively a new concept in Pakistani job market but gradually companies have realised the importance of time saving. It is an effective tool to make quality hiring decisions. It has also simplified the way we recruit. It is efficient, easy to manage and saves you a lot of physical resume storage space. When the mental and emotional well-being of the employee is promoted, there is a general increase in productivity, quality of work, cooperation and creativity; all the conditions that are conducive to forming a respectful workplace.
