LAHORE: Pakistan Football Federation President Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat has named Young Rising Star’s captain Sana Mehmood as captain of the Pakistan national women’s team for the first SAFF Women’s Championship.
Pakistan will appear in the eight-nation inaugural women’s championship which will commence on December 12, 2010 in the tourist resort of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.
The host is placed in Group A along with SA Games champions India, Sri Lanka and Bhutan while Pakistan is bracketed in Group B with Nepal, Afghanistan and Maldives. The two top teams from each of the groups will play the semifinal.
Sana, 21, takes over the captain’s arm band from midfielder Ishrat Fatima of Lahore’s Sports Sciences Department. HEC’s Asmaa Usman, also 21, will act as Sana’s deputy.
The 18-player squad for the first-ever SAFF Women Championship 2010 had already been finalised. Sana is the only female footballer of Pakistan who has lifted the national title twice. Both the occasions saw Young Rising Star FC edge out WAPDA.
