ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly speaker has asked all political parties to send in nominations for the formation of a parliamentary committee which would appoint the chief election commissioner (CEC) as well as members of the Election Commission.
Sources in the Parliament House informed Pakistan Today that NA Speaker Fehmida Mirza on November 25 wrote a letter to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Opposition Leader in the Lower House Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and other leaders concerned seeking nominations for the 12-member parliamentary committee.
He said four members would be nominated from the Senate – two each from the treasury and the opposition benches – while eight members would be nominated from the NA with four from the treasury bench and four from the opposition bench.
Article 213-2A and 2B would govern the appointment of the CEC while Article 218 would govern the committee for the appointment of the EC.
