Smoking kills

The federal government in the US is considering ordering the tobacco and cigarette manufacturing companies to display more graphic and gory images in order to make the people aware of the harmful effects of tobacco usage. What is more interesting is that there are more than one counters displayed on huge billboards that show an estimated count of deaths caused by cigarettes.

I wonder if such steps can also be taken in our country though we are on the right path by at least showing the images of cancer stricken patients. On the other hand, this has not caused any impact on the habitual smokers. The ban on smoking in public places is also flouted without any regard. Another habit that has developed of late is the sheesha culture that is gaining popularity among the educated and young ones of the country.

They are unaware of the serious harmful effects that this smoking habit can cause. They must be made aware of the situation and how they are harming their own bodies and playing with their lives. I wonder why there is no mnitoring body in this regard.

The government should start a campaign to solve this issue with the combined effort of society and other non-governmental organisations. Application of the laws should also be made necessary to make sure that no one harms himself or the others in a public place.
