The politics of Pakistan is a unique comedy of errors. The politicians are eager to overdo themselves in an attempt to gain favours from the establishment and military junta. They sure seem to lack the sense of propriety in understanding that their actions have far reaching impacts on the country, nation and the democracy. All they care about is their petty goals and gains.
The recent example of Nawaz Sharif telling President Zadari that his party would not derail the present democratic setup is another jewel in the crown on behalf of the political party that is the most ardent adversary in the parliament. The logic behind this assurance is beyond my comprehension. Was Nawaz trying to assure that he would not be the one trying to derail the democratic setup, or that he wants an assurance in return for the Punjab government that his younger brother heads? Was he hinting at some other non-democratic actors that could prove thorny?
More than anything, it seems, just because Zardari had called him, he was in a good mood and agreed to work with the government rather than creating hurdles for them as he said a few days ago.
This sort of attitude has to go if the politicians of our country want to be claimed as statesmen and leaders.
