Power sector reforms in eight months, IFIs told

ISLAMABAD: The government on Monday assured the International Financial Institutions (IFI) that the power sector reforms will be completed within the next eight months.
Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf provided this assurance to a joint delegation of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and Asian Development Bank in the federal capital.
According to an official statement issued by the Power Ministry, the joint delegation of IFIs was led by IMF Director for Middle East and Central Asia Adnan Mazari. The secretary and the adviser on energy briefed delegation on the progress being made on the power sector reforms.
The delegation was informed that the business plans of generation companies (GENCOs) and distribution companies (DISCOs) were being prepared, smart meters would be introduced and a consumer classification survey was also being planned. New boards of directors for DISCOs and GENCOs were being set up to give them complete autonomy.
The delegation was informed that the draft law furnished to make amendments to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) Act was in parliament for consideration and approval. The delegation was informed that about 500 employees of the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) had been reposted back to their parent departments.
For resolving the circular debt issue, a comprehensive plan was under consideration to improve the efficiency of the public sector entities.
