Five people, including three doctors are involved in illegal sale of kidneys, Punjab Executive District Officer Health Dr Fayyaz Ranjha told the media on Thursday.
However, an FIR has not been registered yet. Dr Ranjha said that the law enforcement agencies, on the orders of the chief minister, have started a crackdown.
He said the case was highlighted after the death of a female Oman national who died because of the alleged negligence by doctors. He added that the ‘secret’ hospital located in Valencia Town, Lahore has been sealed, but the doctors and other staff have not been arrested yet.
The EDO held an emergency meeting with the secretary law and other officials to decide the legal procedure against the aforementioned criminals.
Talking to Pakistan Today, Health Secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad said that the government will take stern action against whoever is involved in this heinous crime. He said Dr Saleem Akhter and Dr Aftab, who were reported as Mayo Hospital employees only received an initial training from the hospital and are no longer employees of Mayo Hospital.
He said another accused; Dr Fawad Chadhar is currently working at Kot Khawaja Saeed Hospital. He is the main agent running this gang of illegal organ sellers and is currently under police custody.
ORGAN TRANSPLANT BILL
The National Assembly on 12 November, 2009 unanimously passed a landmark bill to regulate transplants of human organs in the country, making their sale and unauthorised transplant punishable with up to 10 years in prison.
