Nutritional benefits of eggs need promotion: UVAS VC

The nutritional benefits of eggs need to be promoted and the general public should be made aware of the commodity’s affordability, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Muhammad Nawaz said on Friday.
He made these remarks while addressing a seminar on the occasion of Egg Day at the varsity’s Pattoki Ravi Campus. Nawaz said that every Pakistani faced a 10 percent deficiency of proteins and calcium, as they did not consume eggs according to the required quantity. Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) Chairman Abdul Hai Mehta, Dean Faculty of Animal Production and Technology Professor Talat Naseer Pasha, Poultry Production Department Chairman Dr Akram and University Registrar Dr Kamran Ashraf also spoke on the occasion.
The UVAS Poultry Production Department organised an egg-eating competition, quiz competition, cooking competition, poster and poultry farm model. Students belonging to the Mustafa Public School, Punjab Allied School, Educators Sir Syed Campus and Paragon School Pattoki also participated in the function. The UVAS VC said that eggs had an important role in providing vitamins and minerals to people. He said that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the food resources of the world would become scarce, as the world’s population would reach 9.2 billion by 2050. Nawaz said that people would require more and more food proteins to keep themselves healthy.
The UVAS VC said that eggs could be used for fighting hunger, malnutrition and starvation. He told the audience that egg yolks provided necessary nutrients to prevent child birth defects, eye-sight problems and heart attacks.
PPA Chairman Hai said that all parents, children, students and athletes needed to realise the importance of eating eggs and should include them in their daily diets. He said that Pakistan consumed 60 eggs per capita while the US and Europe consumed 300 to 400 eggs per capita. Hai urged the poultry industry to improve the packing of eggs.
