Irish vote in poll dominated by economic woes
DUBLIN - Irish voters on Friday look certain to oust their government in elections dominated by the collapse of the economy and a hated international bailout.
The widely expected defeat for the eurozone country's traditional party of government, Fianna Fail, would make the Irish government the first to fall victim to the eurozone debt crisis. "They're getting a good kicking, and they deserve it," said Brendan Buckley, a 47-year-old civil servant, at a polling station in north

Flood victims’ woes forgotten, laments HRCP
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has voiced concern that the problems of the flood-hit population all over Pakistan seem to have come off the priority list even though the difficulties facing the affected people remain as challenging as ever and in some areas have even aggravated.
HRCP has been conducting damage and needs assessment in 33 flood-affected districts across the country and monitoring relief efforts there. In January and February the Commission held

Raging inflation adds to Pakistan’s woes
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's crippling inflation rate has left trader Mohammad Farouk with a painful task at the end of each day - throwing out a large quantity of his fruits and vegetables because it's too expensive to sell. Soaring prices also mean he often has to purchase stocks on credit from wholesalers.
"We can't make money anymore because prices have been high for so long," said Farouk, sitting beside other idle merchants, warming their hands over a fire burning in a large can.

STUDENT WOES – Winter holidays before winter
LAHORE - From a wrong person wearing the king's crown to the untimely winter holidays for the Punjab University (PU) students, anything out of place gets to be the center of attention. One may ponder as to what may be the purpose of winter holidays.
It ranges from facilitating students to spend quality time with their family, probably on a hill station, to keeping them warm in their houses and relaxing them cold university hours during a bone chilling, literally, season.

WEEK IN SPORTS – Pakistan’s sporting woes
LAHORE: Cricket is a sport where, apart from physical attributes like hand-eye coordination and strength, emotional steadiness and maturity counts for just as much. Umar Akmal, for instance, has all the hand-eye coordination he will ever need, but is emotionally and mentally handicapped.
He can't bat in a Test match to save his life. It is, therefore, left to mature players like Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq to steady the sinking ship and take it out of troubled waters.
