CAIRO - Egyptians flocked to the polls on Saturday for the first time since President Hosni Mubarak was toppled to vote in a referendum on constitutional reforms which the military rulers hope will allow elections within six months.
By early morning, queues of hundreds had formed at polling stations across the country to cast ballots in the first vote in living memory whose outcome has not been known in advance. The result will determine how quickly Egypt can hold elections.

"There has been a significant change in the position of the White House," Alistair Burt, a British Foreign Office minister with special responsibility for the Middle East, told BBC radio. "We obviously appreciate that the United States does realise the urgency of the situation."

Irish vote in poll dominated by economic woes

DUBLIN - Irish voters on Friday look certain to oust their government in elections dominated by the collapse of the economy and a hated international bailout.
The widely expected defeat for the eurozone country's traditional party of government, Fianna Fail, would make the Irish government the first to fall victim to the eurozone debt crisis. "They're getting a good kicking, and they deserve it," said Brendan Buckley, a 47-year-old civil servant, at a polling station in north

ASTANA - The Kazakh parliament is on Friday expected to order a referendum on extending President Nursultan Nazarbayev's rule to 2020, defying US criticism of a move that would scrap two planned presidential polls. A joint session of the upper and lower houses is set to agree the referendum after a petition for the plebiscite gathered an astonishing five million signatures -- one half of the electorate and one third of the population. Nigerians vote in ‘test’ poll amid security

ASABA - Nigerians voted on Thursday in a key state governor's ballot seen as a test ahead of April's nationwide elections, with massive security deployed amid fears of further violence.
The governor's election in Delta State, located in the main oil-producing Niger Delta region, came after a court invalidated the result of the 2007 vote after fraud allegations and ordered a re-run just months before a new ballot. Nigeria has been hit by a series of attacks in recent weeks,

"This treaty has the full support of your

Romanian govt to face fresh no-confidence vote

BUCHAREST: Romania's opposition filed a no-confidence motion over the government's IMF-backed wage reform on Wednesday, a move with only slim chances of success, just two months after a similar bid failed. The government of Prime Minister Emil Boc survived two no-confidence votes by the leftist opposition this year and its wider margin on the second occasion in October suggests it can remain in power and pass outstanding International Monetary Fund-mandated reforms.

In a historic conclusion to two years of frenzied lobbying, world football supremo Sepp Blatter revealed the winners following a secret ballot of 22 FIFA executive committee members in Zurich.
The announcement means the World Cup will be staged in two countries which have never hosted
