Pakistan unlikely to meet tax target despite 11pc rise

KARACHI - Tax collection, in the country, has surged by 11 percent during first seven months of the current fiscal year, official sources revealed on Monday.
Pakistan has long been under fire with economic observers, at home and abroad, equally critical of less than nine percent Tax to GDP Ratio that, critiques say, is lowest in the world and should, therefore, be increased by extending the tax net particularly to untaxed segments like agriculturists and affluent class.

PML-N unlikely to go for early elections

NEWS ANALYSIS - Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif finally announced his party's split with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in Punjab on Friday. While certainly dealing a blow to the PPP and its recent reconciliatory efforts, the PML-N leader stopped short of announcing an all-out war against the PPP for the time being.

‘Pakistan unlikely to import sugar this year’

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan is unlikely to import sugar this year because the country will have enough stocks to meet domestic requirements, Food Minister Nazar Muhammad Gondal has said. Pakistan imposes no import duty on white sugar and the government in September waived a 25 percent duty on raw sugar to encourage the private sector to import the sweetener after fears August floods would reduce the 2010/11 crop to 3.2 million tonnes.
But Gondal said that initial estimates suggest the

He added that many other contractors working on various uplift projects were

Nine-month extension from IMF unlikely

ISLAMABAD - The government is headed towards troubled waters, as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is unlikely to grant it the desired nine-month extension in the already suspended $11.3 billion standby arrangement programme.
Informed source said the programme had an in-built mechanism for an extension of up to three months, but the extension of another six months seems unlikely to be granted, as it construes that the government is not prepared to implement the reformed

EU unlikely to lift ban on seafood imports from Pakistan

KARACHI: The European Union (EU) is unlikely to lift a ban on the import of seafood products from Pakistan since the Sindh government and the Karachi Fish Harbour authorities are seemingly reluctant to comply with the EU's instructions, Pakistan Today learnt on Friday.
The EU had barred seafood imports from Pakistan in April 2007, an action taken following EU's inspectors visit to Pakistan. The inspectors had found the industry's food processing to be substandard, causing
