ISLAMABAD - Pakistan is all set to harvest a bumper wheat crop of 24.4 million tonnes from the wheat crop sown over 8.8 million hectares acreage, says the second estimate of the crop issued by the provinces to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. ISLAMABAD - Bumper wheat harvest of over 24 million tonnes is expected during the current crop season in comparison to 22 million tonnes required for domestic consumption. Wheat Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MinFA) Development Commissioner Dr Shakeel Ahmad Khan has said that crop harvesting was in full swing in Sindh where over 115,000 tonnes of the commodity has been procured.

LAHORE - The Punjab Food Department has sold over 0.8 million tonnes of wheat for export while agreements have been signed for the sale of more wheat to exporters. Out of 6.6 million tonnes wheat in stocks from procurement of 2010-11, the Punjab Food Department has so far sold over four million tonnes of wheat helping the department to pay back the loans against it and creating room for the storage of wheat to be procured in current season.

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan is estimated to have produced 4.1 million tonnes of sugar from the 2010/11 crop, industry officials said on Wednesday, adding there was no need to import the sweetener this year, given ample stocks.
The new estimate is up nearly 400,000 tonnes from the previous projection despite initial fears that output would fall because of massive summer floods in 2010 that damaged several crops, including sugarcane.

ISLAMABAD - The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, on Monday, allowed the Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Supplies Corporation (PASSCO) to sell 200,000 tonnes of wheat for export, disallowed institutional investment in the national savings schemes and set up a committee to decide on a subsidy worth Rs 4.6 billion to farmers on 225,000 tonnes of imported urea.
The ECC meeting was held under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on Monday.
