Sudanese women defy riot police in ‘freedom’ protest
KHARTOUM - A group of women demonstrated in the Sudanese capital on Sunday to demand the release of dozens of protesters arrested last month, as three journalists were detained in a separate rally. Around 25 women, among them mothers of those still in custody since anti-government protests on January 30, stood waiting for hours outside the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) building.

Low-security British prison on fire after riot
LONDON - Rioting prisoners set fire to one block of a low-security prison in southern England early on Saturday and the flames were spreading because fire officers could not approach the building.

Russian football fans run riot in Moscow protest
MOSCOW: Russian football fans and ultranationalists ran riot in the centre of Moscow on Saturday, when a demonstration against the death of a fan descended into violence that left 13 people hospitalised. Thousands of fans, supported by members of far-right groups, gathered in Manezhnaya Square near the Kremlin for the unauthorised protest, with some shouting slogans such as "Russia for Russians" and performing Nazi salutes, according to an AFP photographer.

British PM condemns student riot at party HQs
LONDON: British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday branded the ugly riots at his party's headquarters "completely unacceptable" after a student protest over tuition fees turned violent.
Cameron also criticised the "inadequate" police response, saying there had only been a small number of officers deployed to protect the London building housing the Conservative Party's offices when the violence broke out Wednesday.
