LONDON - A convicted racist who burned a Holy Quran in front of city centre shoppers in Carlisle, north west England, has been jailed for 70 days after a judge described the act as "theatrical bigotry".
Andrew Ryan stole a copy of the holy book from Carlisle Library and then set it on fire with a lighter as a crowd gathered to hear his protests in front of a monument. Police arrested Ryan shortly after the lunchtime incident on January 19 this year, reports British media.

LAHORE - A 24-year-old man desecrated the Bible at the gates of Saint Anthony's Catholic Church on Lawrence Road on Friday in order to "avenge" extremist US preacher Terry Jones' desecration of the Holy Quran. Police arrested the man and registered a case against him under section 295-A of the PPC.
Police said Akhtar Hussain, a resident of Kasur, had first tried to force entry into the church, whereupon security guards at the gates stopped him and asked for identification.

UNITED NATIONS - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran by pastors of a Baptist Church in Gainesville, Florida and said such actions cannot be condoned by any religion.
He said such actions contradict the efforts of the United Nations and many people around the world to promote tolerance, intercultural understanding and mutual respect between cultures and religions.

JALALABAD - More than 1,000 Afghans took to streets on Monday to protest against the burning of a Quran by an American pastor, pushing angry protests into a fourth day, witnesses said.

Afghan leader calls on US Congress to condemn Quran burning
KABUL - Afghan President Hamid Karzai called on Sunday for the U.S. Congress to condemn the burning of Quran by a radical fundamentalist U.S. pastor and prevent it from happening again, his office said in a statement.
