With the decision to commit Pakistan’s troops to Saudi Arabia’s cause in Yemen hanging in limbo, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has urged a peaceful solution to the Yemen crisis through dialogue with warring factions and reiterated the importance of the Saudi Kingdom as a ‘strategic ally’.

Dispelling the notion that Pakistan has committed its troops to Saudi Arabia for fighting Houthi rebels in Yemen, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Tuesday that there was no immediate threat to Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity and Pakistan is “not in a hurry” to decide on joining the Saudi-led coalition.

As coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia continue to pound Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen, all eyes are on Pakistan which is still indecisive over the issue of sending its troops to the war-hit region on the Saudi Kingdom’s call for military assistance.

While the top civil and military leadership reiterates pledge for "supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia", severe public and media pressure and lack of political support has however compelled the federal government to put off, at least for time being, its previous decision to send military troops to join allied forces against Yemeni rebels.

Talking to a delegation of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNAs from Faisalabad at the Prime Minister’s House on Thursday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made it clear that all political parties were taken on board before launching an operation in Karachi and there was no justification for anyone in the country for keeping illegal weapons.
