SC forms bench on by-poll nominations

ISLAMABAD: Accepting an application for early hearing, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has constituted a three-member Supreme Court bench to settle a law point whether the fresh election nomination papers could be accepted after the scrutiny.

Parliamentary body undecided on JCP nominations for judges

ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary committee on judges' appointment could not reach a consensus on Wednesday on the Judicial Commission of Pakistan's nominations for the chief justice and other two judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC). The committee, which met with Senator Nayyar Bukhari in the chair, approved the Judicial Commission's recommendations for granting one year's extension in the tenures of additional judges of the Sindh, Balochistan and Peshawar high courts.

LAHORE: A petition was moved in the Supreme Court's Lahore Registry on Tuesday challenging the nominations of former law minister Dr Khalid Ranjha and Justice (retd) Ali Hussain Qazilbash as members of the Judicial Commission.
The petition, filed by Barrister Zafarullah, pleaded that Justice (r) Qazilbash was not fit to perform any job as he was about 85-year-old, adding that his nomination was also in violation of the verdict in the Al Jihad Trust case.
