KARACHI - The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has pinned the permanent reinstatement of over 4,000 workers on a Rs 1.79 per unit tariff increase as well as government institutions clearing the power utility's outstanding dues, Pakistan Today has learnt.

KESC abolishes ‘redundant’ departments; 4,000 axed
KARACHI - The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) announced on Wednesday that it has abolished a number of its non-core and redundant departments.
People working in these departments were offered a voluntary separation scheme (VSS) that closed on January 15.
Around 4,000 KESC employees, who did not opt for the VSS, have now been retrenched, said a press release issued by the power utility.

KESC police arrest wire-stealing gang
KARACHI - The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) police have arrested a gang of four for allegedly trying to steal copper wire from a substation in Defence area.
Sources said the police recovered wire cutters and two pistols from the possession of the gang, known as Lalay group, led by notorious Azizur Rehman Lalay and also took a Toyota car into custody.
Defence police have registered a case against the culprits and obtained their physical remand until January 21.

KARACHI - Many areas of the city, including Clifton, Keamari and Shirin Jinnah Colony, were without electricity for over nine hours on Sunday.
Sources claimed that faults at a Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) grid station were the reason for the major power outage.
Power supply was suspended to these areas at around 9:00 am. Residents of the affected areas were upset as Sunday is a weekly holiday.

KARACHI - Power consumers across the city have started receiving inflated electricity bills after the installation of new meters by the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), on claims of the previous ones being faulty, slow, or tampered, etc.

KESC gets hefty increase on security deposit
KARACHI: People in Karachi are faced with a fresh dent as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has allowed KESC to swell the security deposit for installation of new connections by five times the previous amount.
The previous charge was a meager one thousand rupees, however, the revised charges mean that a five kilowatt power connection would cost six thousand rupees, sources said.
