Dubai movie fest opens with Firth film
DUBAI: The seventh Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) opened on Sunday with the Tom Hooper-directed "The King's Speech" starring Colin Firth, which movie pundits say is Oscar-bound.
Firth plays the leading role as Britain's King George VI in the historical comedy set in a time of fading empire. A total of 157 films from 57 countries are taking part in this year's DIFF, where new Arab talent is also on show, particularly from Egypt.

CM to attend trade conference in Dubai
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif will participate in the Pakistan Business and Investment Conference which will be hosted by the International Business Forum Dubai in collaboration with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Punjab Board of Investment and Trade in Dubai on December 13. LAHORE: Pakistani batsman Salman Butt and bowler Mohammad Aamer vowed Friday to prove their innocence as they left for Dubai to appeal against their suspension over a spot-fixing scandal. Dubai World’s restructuring officer steps down
DUBAI: The Chief Restructuring Officer of Dubai World, Aidan Birkett, is stepping down after the debt-laden group reached a deal to restructure its debt, stated an official statement released on Wednesday.
"Birkett has now successfully completed his work at Dubai World and will be stepping down on 14th October 2010," said the Dubai government statement.

Emirates denies receiving Dubai subsidies
DUBAI: Dubai's Emirates airlines, the Middle East's largest carrier, denied on Tuesday receiving government subsidies, hitting back at European claims that it was competing on the back of state aid.
