Vowing to not allow any breathing space to terrorism in his area of influence, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told reporters in a press conference in Karachi on Monday afternoon that as many as 36,000 terrorists have been arrested in 10,000 intelligence-based operations across the country since June 2014 when Operation Zarb-e-Azb was launched and the government was working hard to rid the country of terrorists who wanted to “divide the nation”.

While Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif cancelled his three-day visit to Sri Lanka and rushed to Karachi to review the strategy to deal with the new wave of terrorism and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also reached the port city in the evening, the mysterious absence of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan from the political scene once again brought internal bickering within the federal cabinet into the limelight.

Pakistan on Wednesday said it is determined to fight terror within its borders and the region but cautioned against the international community repeating the “past mistake of abandoning the region”, as it did so after the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1990s – a development which has had wide-ranging security implications.

While noted defence experts have expressed scepticism over the government’s move to form a parliamentary committee for framing an anti-terrorism action plan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has also expressed its reservations over the committee’s formation with PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi stating that the party chief Imran Khan had proposed the government forms an experts’ committee and not a parliamentary committee.
