The Eco-Internship Programme 2011 concluded at the Government College University, (GCU) Lahore on Thursday after giving training to 108 students about conservation of the eco-system, Pakistan’s natural resources and environmental challenges.
The internship programme was initiated by WWF Pakistan, in collaboration with the GCU Career Guidance and Placement Centre (CGPC). GCU Registrar Anjum Nisar chaired the certificate awarding ceremony of the progarmme while WWF Pakistan Director Operations Anwar Naseem was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, Nisar said that academic refinement of students could not be achieved without offering them adequate exposure to harsh realities of everyday life.
He hoped that the eco-internship programme would help students to develop an insight into eco-dynamics and challenges confronting the eco-system of Pakistan. “Since, the older generation failed in their responsibility as custodians of our natural resources, it is imperative for the youth to play an effective role for ecological conservation in the future,” the GCU registrar said.
Naseem lamented the lack of opportunities in Pakistan for students to get actively involved in environmental conservation. He said that WWF Pakistan has put in its best efforts to train GCU students with modern techniques, including environment expert presentations, group work, hands on activities, documentaries, interactive discussions, creative challenges and enriching exposure visits.
GCU CGPC Advisor Yousaf Bashir congratulated the students who became official ambassadors of WWF Pakistan upon conclusion of the progarmme. He urged them to solicit support of the masses for noble cause of environmental conservation. Student Mohsin Gul was awarded a special prize for his overall commendable performance during the training, while performance of Ayesha Javed, Mahjabeen Irfan, Aneeba Rashid, Naila Islam, Sahrish Jabbar, Maryam Mukhtar, Rizwan Noor, Hafiza Jawaria Munir and Anum Munir Rana was also appreciated.
