WFP to initiate food programme for Kurram people

The United Nations is launching a food distribution programme by the end of the month for the people affected by military operation in Kurram Agency. “The World Food Programme (WFP) will start its food distribution programme this month while the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is currently registering the affected people. So far, we have received figures of 7,000 to 8,000 people,” WFP spokesman Amjad Jamal told Pakistan Wednesday. When asked why the WFP did not start operation in the area, he said the FATA Disaster Management Authority FDMA was currently providing food to the tribesmen, adding that the WFP was in contact with the FDMA and would start the process after the completion of the registration process or even before if the number of the affected persons increased or supplies of the FDMA run short. The Pakistan Army had launched military action in Kurram region for clearing the region of militants who were indulged in, terrorism kidnapping and suicide attacks. The tribal district experiencing the attacks militants who had been sneaking into the area form other parts of the FATA. The WFP operation would provide food assistance to those people who have vacated the area owing to military action.
