— Petitioner names NA speaker, federal govt as respondents

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC)  on Friday was moved against the appointment of Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Shehbaz was elected to head the committee after a months-long tussle between the government and opposition over allowing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president to head the apex accountability body of parliament.

On Thursday, production orders were issued for Shehbaz, who is currently in the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) remand, to chair the first meeting of PAC on Friday at 3 pm.

In his petition, the petitioner Advocate Azhar Siddiqui has named the federal government and the National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser as respondents.

Siddiqui has argued that Shehbaz should not be allowed to head the committee as he is facing corruption allegations. He has requested LHC to nullify his appointment.
