LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Thursday donated Rs1 million to the United Christian Hospital (UCH).

The top judge, while hearing a suo motu case pertaining to the dilapidated condition of the hospital, also ordered a financial audit of the past 10 years.

“Who is supposed to run the hospital? Should the Supreme Court run it?” the CJP asked the chairman of the steering committee, former interim health minister Dr Jawad Sajid Khan, during the course of proceedings.

The committee chairman told the court that they needed Rs40 to 50 million for the restoration of the hospital and asked Justice Nisar to constitute a six-member steering committee in this regard.

Expressing displeasure over the lack of medicines at the hospital, the chief justice told the authorities to suggest six names for the steering committee.

He also said that it was the SC that had removed encroachments from hospital’s land.

In November, the CJP had taken notice of the “miserable condition” of the UCH.

During a hearing at the apex court’s registry in Lahore, he had directed provision of health facilities at medical centres for the relief of the masses. “Christian community should not feel deprived,” he had added.

Later Justice Nisar had visited the hospital and taken a look at its wards. He had also convened a meeting with the hospital administration that apprised him of the problems.

He had ordered the chief secretary to come up with a restoration plan for the hospital within a week and sought its revamping within six weeks’ time.
