LAHORE: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday ruled that land of Pakistan Railways will not be used for the establishment of housing societies or issued on lease till further orders.

A two-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, was hearing a suo motu case pertaining to the deficit in Railways’ affairs.

Railways Minister Shaikh Rasheed Ahmed also appeared before the bench during the hearing.

The court called stay orders from all high courts and subordinate courts regarding railway lands.

The judges remarked that only the department itself could utilise the lands it owned.

The bench also ordered the removal of encroachments from railway land in Chakwal and other areas. “Railways’ land is owned by the federal government and not the department,” it remarked.

The apex court then summoned the owners of the Royal Palm Club on December 27 and adjourned the hearing.
