As 2018 has come to an end, here is a sneak peek into the major sporting events of the year.

CRICKET

Asia Cup: The 14th edition of Asia Cup, which was held in the UAE in September 2018, was won by India for the record seventh time.

ICC Women’s World T20: The sixth edition of the ICC Women’s World T20 was held in West Indies from 9 to 24 November. The final, which was held between arch-rivals between England and Australia, was claimed by Australia.

ICC U19 Cricket World Cup: The 2018 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup was held in New Zealand. India claimed the title for the fourth time.

FOOTBALL:

FIFA Football World Cup: 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup was played in Russia from June 14 to July 15. The world’s most expensive tournament, at an estimated cost of $14.2 billion, was claimed by France, for the second time, with first being 1998.

UEFA Nations League: The first phase of UEFA Nations League, a biennial international football competition contested by the senior men’s national teams of the member associations of UEFA, was played in September 2018. The four group winners from League A will qualify for the finals, to be played in Portugal in June 2019.

UEFA Champions League Final: UEFA Champions League is a premier European club football tournament. Its 63rd edition’s final which was played between on May 26 was claimed by Real Madrid for the third consecutive time.

TENNIS:

Australian Open: The 2018 Australian Open was played at Melbourne Park between 15–28 January 2018. The first Grand Slam tournament of the 2018 season was won by Roger Federer in Men’s Singles category and Caroline Wozniacki in Women’s Singles category.

French Open: French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year 2018 was played in Paris, France. The tournament which played from May 27 to June 10. Rafael Nadal and Simona Halaep won Men’s and Women’s Singles respectively to receive €2,200,000 apiece.

Wimbledon Open: The 2018 Wimbledon Championships, played in Wimbledon, London, and spanned across two weeks between July 2 and July 15, was claimed by Novak Djokovic in Gentleman’s Singles title and Angelique Kerber in Ladies Singles title.

US Open: The 138th edition of the US Open was played in New York City between August 7 and September 9, and was claimed by Novak Djokovic in Men’s Singles and Naomi Osaka in Women’s Singles.

CYCLING: 

Tour de France: The 105th edition of Tour de France was won by Geraint Thomas, a Welsh racing cyclist. The cycling Grand Tour was held from July 7 to July 29 and featured 171 cyclists in a race which was spanned over 21 stages.

HOCKEY: 

Women’s Hockey World Cup: The 14th edition of the International Women’s Hockey World Cup, which was held in the historic city of London from July 21 to August 5, was secured by the Netherlands for the record eighth time.

VOLLEYBALL: 

Women’s Volleyball World Championship: 2018 Women’s Volleyball World Championship was hosted by Japan from 29 September to 20 October and claimed by Serbia who bested Italy to claim the title.

MULTI-GAMES: 

Winter Olympics: Commonly known as PyeongChang 2018, was held between 9 and 25 February 2018 in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province, South Korea. Norway led the total medal tally with 39.

Summer Youth Olympics: The 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, officially known as III Summer Youth Olympic Games was held in Argentina between 6 and 18 October. Russia owned the scoreboard with 59 medals out of which 29 were of gold.

Commonwealth Games: The 21st annual edition of the 2018 Commonwealth Games was held in Australia between 4 and 5 April 2018. Host Aussies topped the medal chart with 198 medals, which included record 80 golds.
