The Sindh government has asked the Pakistan Army to remain on standby for being called in the city to control the worsening law and order situation, particularly curbing the ongoing spree of targeted killings in some areas of the metropolis, Pakistan Today has reliably learnt.
The current wave of targeted violence has claimed more than 60 precious lives in four consecutive days, besides creating fear and unrest among the citizens. President Asif Ali Zardari has also called the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)’s senior leadership to the federal capital for discussing the overall situation of the metropolis.
Under the current situation, Sindh Home Department has asked the army to remain on standby so that it could react to the orders, if so taken by the authorities at the federal level to end targeted killings and maintain law and order in the city, well-placed sources told Pakistan Today.
The sources added that although, there is no need to deploy army personnel, it will only remain alert to help the law enforcement agencies in case any decision to call in the army is taken by the president and prime minister to ensure safety and security of human lives and property.
The senior police officials concerned are evolving a mechanism to take on the criminal elements so that the menace of killing of innocent people can be controlled once and for all. At least 1,000 personnel of the Frontier Constabulary and 400 police commandoes have been instructed to take positions in the troubled areas and take strict actions against the violators of law, the sources claimed.
