SHC gives one-month ultimatum to resolve traffic issues

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday gave all Karachi stakeholders a one-month ultimatum to carry out joint efforts and formulate a plan to resolve traffic problems faced by the metropolis.

A two-member bench of SHC heard the petition seeking a solution to traffic issues faced by the country’s mega city. Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic, Secretary Revenue and other officials appeared before the court.

The mayor and other officials assured the court of resolving the traffic problems and the issue pertaining to the entrance of large vehicles in the city.

The mayor told the court that a grand operation against the encroachment was in progress.

“The traffic problems will be resolved soon after the removal of encroachments in the city,” he said.

The bench remarked that the city is facing traffic problems, and hence it is necessary to take effective steps to solve the issue. The officials told the court that a meeting of all stakeholders would be held at the Commissioner’s office, which will be attended by Mayor Karachi, Commissioner Karachi, Secretary Revenue, Secretary Transport, traffic officials and NHA representatives.

The court adjourned the hearing till 14th December.

Talking to media persons after the hearing, the mayor said that the court had ordered to hold a meeting regarding traffic problems. The meeting would be summoned within 10 days at the Commissioner’s office and a final decision would be made in this regard, the mayor said.

He said that a joint encroachment removal report would be submitted in the court within a month and implementation of the traffic rules would also been ensured.
