ISLAMABAD: At least 23 posts in the Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO (PNCU)—a department of the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training— are lying vacant for a long while, but the federal government has made no effort to address the issue.

According to the documents available with Pakistan Today, out of the total 152 sanctioned posts for the PNCU, only 129 are filled, while 23 are lying vacant.

The details showed that out of the total sanctioned 31 BPS-17 and above posts, 19 are filled while 12 are vacant, similarly out of the total 121 posts ranging from 16 and below, 110 are filled and 11 are vacant.

Sources said some officials in the education ministry are interested in getting the additional charge because the department had huge funds, including the Malala Fund. Under the said fund, at least nine projects are underway in several districts of the country.

In addition, the department is in charge of the training programmes related to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO), including scholarships and research grants.
