ISLAMABAD: The National University of Modern Languages (NUML)’s management on Thursday decided to close the varsity for three days after getting threats of an attack.
A large contingent of police, led by Industrial Area Station House Officer (SHO) Rana Akram, cordoned off the university and reviewed security arrangements. The security supervisor of the university, Mazhar Hussain, confirmed that the Interior Ministry had warned the university of a possible suicide attack, particularly on the occasion of the annual entry test which was scheduled for today (Friday).
The spokesman of NUML, Mudasar Muktar, said the new date for the entry tests would be announced later. Security at the university had been beefed up and swarms of police had been deployed outside the campus, while soldiers took charge of hostel security duties where hundreds of foreign students lived.
News of the threat caused fear and panic among the students and faculty members. An informed NUML source confided to Pakistan Today that the university management had received a letter from the Interior Ministry warning of a possible suicide attack by a terrorist group.
“After receiving the letter from the crisis management cell of the Interior Ministry, the rector summoned an emergency meeting of heads of all departments to review the security situation. The meeting decided to close the varsity for at least three days,” he added.
Students said the university had been closed without a prior notice and the management was not allowing them to enter to pick up their luggage. “I have no money or clothes with me. I have been denied entry and all my belongings are inside the hostel,” Salal Khan, a BBA student, said.
