ISLAMABAD: A police officer who was given a life sentence for kidnapping a Belgian citizen had his acquittal appeal rejected by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the appeal.

Kohsa, while rejecting the acquittal appeal, remarked that strict punishment must be meted out against those who are supposed to uphold the law.

“Why don’t we turn the criminal’s life sentence into a death sentence,” he asked.

According to the prosecutor, the police officer, Mohammad Zubair, had abducted a Pakistani-origin Belgian national. Zubair had obtained Rs200,00 in ransom as well.

The police officer was sentenced to life in prison by a trial court.

The SC’s judgement follows one made by the Lahore High Court (LHC) for upholding the sentence.
