LAHORE: A petition to summon former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif over the Model Town case was rejected by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday.
An ‘anti-encroachment’ police operation on June 17, 2014 in Lahore’s Model Town area against workers of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek- (PAT) resulted in the deaths of 14 people and injuries to another 100.
A Minhaj-ul-Quran International member named Jawad Hamid had filed a petition requesting the court to summon a total of 12 individuals over the case. Included in the list were former railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and former Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah.
Former Punjab inspector general Mushtaq Sukhera was also directed to appear before the court.
MODEL TOWN INCIDENT REPORT:
Upon LHC directives, the Punjab government had made public an investigative report into the Model Town incident on December 5, 2017.
The report claimed that police had tried to hide important facts regarding directives to open fire on the protesters.
Justice Baqir Najfi commission had prepared the report.
The report explained that a legal opinion over the operation was not sought from the Punjab advocate general.
