The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has condemned the attacks on the Gulistan-e-Jauhar Integrated Business Centre (IBC) general manager (GM) and a cable technician in Saddar, a press release issued by the power utility said on Saturday. The GM and his sons escaped unhurt; however, Irshad, the technician, was seriously injured. Irshad was kidnapped on Saturday afternoon by men who introduced themselves as KESC labour union members and ordered him to stop working on a high-tension joint near the YMCA hostel.
His attackers had allegedly wanted to take him to Keamari, and he was later found in a bad shape bearing several dagger wounds on his body. He was shifted to the Liaquat National Hospital. Separately, a group of alleged KESC labour union members had attacked Gulistan-e-Jauhar IBC GM Ali Akbar Baloch and his sons the previous evening. The GM and his sons narrowly escaped the attempted murder as the locals forced the suspects to flee.
The KESC has expressed concerns over increasing attacks on repair teams, saying that it was the second time that the same technician had been attacked. The KESC also expressed distress over the government’s failure in protecting the power company’s employees, offices and installations as ordered by the Sindh High Court on June 23.
The KESC demanded immediate action on court orders and said that the government needs to perform its duties to provide protection to the KESC employees as is their right according to the Constitution of Pakistan.
The power utility said that the government has fallen short of establishing the writ of law and providing constitutional rights to the private entity to function and operate in a safe and secure manner.
The KESC believes that the criminal negligence of the civil and law enforcement authorities in their constitutional task has rendered the whole population of Karachi helpless and miserable at the hands of miscreants who have been increasingly attacking KESC employees.
