Approximately 600 educational institutes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) tribal districts have been been inoperational for the past decade due to security issues or population displacement, a local media outlet reported on Saturday.

Similarly, South Waziristan’s Mehsud area has over 500 inoperational government schools, with makeshift classes for students conducted in tents with assistance from donor agencies.

The teachers who were formerly employed at the schools continue to receive salaries even though they have moved abroad or to other areas of the country.

Approximately 1,500 schools or colleges were attacked by militants in terrorist attacks over the previous decade.
