LAHORE: Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muhammad Tahir has said that four-layered security would be provided to majalis and processions in sensitive districts during Muharram by utilising all available resources, modern technology and comprehensive search through metal detectors, walk through gates and continuous CCTV monitoring.
Speaking during a high-level meeting on Friday, he said that special control rooms should be set up for monitoring of security arrangements in all districts and plainclothes commandos should be deployed for security of gatherings. He also directed to deploy snipers on rooftops of buildings on routes of sensitive processions and Majalis.
On the occasion, all RPOs and DPOs briefed Punjab IG about the devised security plan and informed him that more than 140,000 officers and officials will perform security duty in 7,763 mosques and Imam Bargahs across the province.
A total of 139,402 officers and officials will perform security duty for 36,638 Majalis held during the holy month. The personnel will include 1,038 gazetted officers, 1,803 inspectors, 4,431 sub-inspectors, 9,094 ASIs, 15,959 head constables, 107,077 constables, 37,204 police volunteers, 5,590 special police personnel and 90,930 volunteers.
Besides security, the traffic for Muharram days as well as refreshments for the deployed personnel were also discussed in the meeting that was attended by Additional Welfare and Finance IG Tariq Masood Yasin, CTD Additional IG Muhammad Tahir Rai, Special Branch Additional IG Muhammad Farooq Mazhar, Operations DIG Sajjad Hassan Manj, PC DIG Dr Inam Waheed and other senior police officers.
