ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Arif Alvi is set to start his campaign from Peshawar on Thursday for the upcoming presidential election.
Alvi was nominated by Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan as a potential candidate for the post of the president.
Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman, who has been fielded by all opposition parties except Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is set to visit Quetta in a bid to convince lawmakers to cast their vote for him during the election.
Alvi, Fazl and PPP’s Aitzaz Ahsan are in the run for the presidential election.
Earlier, the JUI-F chief met leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) in Karachi and appealed to them for support in the presidential election. Moreover, Maulana Fazlur Rahman also met with PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari to seek his cooperation for the election.
However, the PPP met on Tuesday to discuss cooperation sought by Maulana Fazl but decided that it would not withdraw its presidential candidate Aitzaz Ahsan.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had announced that the presidential elections will be held on September 4.
Nomination papers for the presidential elections can be filed until August 27, according to the electoral body’s notification.
The commission will scrutinise the nomination papers on August 29 and candidates can withdraw their candidature by August 30.
