The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government will have to cut the share of expenses of the provinces from the federal pool by as much as eight percent if it wants to focus on social development, former caretaker finance minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar said.

The recommendations were made by Akhtar in a policy paper which outlines a reduction in the cumulative share of all provinces from 57.5 per cent to 49.3 per cent. An acceptance of the policy recommendation would result in the provision of funds cut down by Rs212 billion to Rs2.38 trillion for the provinces.

The policy paper’s recommendation comes at a time when the country is facing significant fiscal challenges.
