LAHORE: Social media site Twitter on Saturday suspended the accounts of Baloch nationalist leaders and political parties ahead of the 12th death anniversary of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti.

The accounts that were suspended included ones belonging to Khalil Baloch, Shah Akhtar Nadeem, Allah Nazar Baloch and proscribed Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF).

According to Twitter’s rules, accounts are suspended if they are spam or just plain fake, and they introduce security risks for Twitter and all other users.

An account can also be suspended if Twitter suspects that an account has been hacked or compromised. Moreover, the social media site may suspend an account if it has been reported as violating Twitter’s rules surrounding abuse.

When an account engages in abusive behaviour, like sending threats to others or impersonating other accounts, Twitter may suspend it temporarily or, in some cases, permanently.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Balochistan Republican Party (BRP) has announced that it will launch an online campaign to commemorate Akbar Bugti on his death anniversary on August 26.

Earlier, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued a warning to ban Twitter in the country if the micro-blogging website fails to block objectionable content.

Pakistan Today contacted Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry to ascertain government’s stance on the matter but no response was received.
