LAHORE: Carlton Tower Hotel cut the combined team of Guard Group and Diamond Paints into half in the final to claim the Novices Polo Cup 2010 here at the Lahore Polo Club’s Aibak Ground on Sunday.
Rijas on the other hand claimed the subsidiary final when it edged aside Karachi Polo Team 5-4 earlier in the day.
In the presence of chief guest Gen. (R) Jehangir Karamat and fans who gathered at the LPC lounge to enjoy the mild weather, Shah Qubali Alam and Hamza Mawaz Khan superseded the heroics of their rival team’s star Taimur Ali Malik by converting three goals each in Carlton Tower Hotel’s 10-5 goals win.
Captivating the match with his skills, Taimur produced all the five goals for the losing team Guard-Diamond.
The winning team also got contributions from Mohammad Randhawa and Adnan Jalil. Qublai and Hamza dominated the match in the first two chukkers and Taimur started to grip the game from the third chukker and took full control of the fourth in which he scored all the three goals.
In the earlier match of the day, Omer Asjad Malhi converted three of the five goals scored by Rijas against the four produced by Karachi Polo Team. The two teams fought a close match till the end when Faisal Shahzad came up with the winner after they were locked at four-all by the close of third chukker. Mudassar Khan, Feroze Gulzar and Shahid Hayat were the scorers from Karachi side while Anas Sheikh was the third Rijas player who made the scoreboard tick. The umpires for the matches were Saqib Khan Khakwani, Dr. Faisal Khokhar and Azhar Ali.
