ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday decided to withhold the victory notification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Shaukat Yousafzai from PK-23 (Shangla) due to low turnout of female voters.

Chief Election Commissioner Justice (r) Sardar Muhammad Raza headed a five-member bench to discuss low female voter turnout in the constituency. The petitioner and the winning candidates were both absent from the hearing hence the electoral body decided to withhold the notification.

The commission has adjourned the hearing till August 13.

According to ECP, 86,698 women were registered to vote from the constituency while only 3,505 cast their votes.

Yousafzai had won from PK-23 Shangla with 17,399 votes in the General Elections 2018.

Earlier, the ECP had announced that it would withhold election results if the female voter turnout from any constituency was less than 10 per cent.
