MUZAFFARGARH: A three-foot-long Indus dolphin trapped at Taunsa Barrage was rescued from by fishermen and released back into the river on Monday morning.

One of the rarest mammals in the world, the Indus dolphin can grow up to 2.5 metres in length. Classified as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), around 1,000 of the dolphins live in a 1,200 km length of the Indus river. IUCN states that the population of the rare species has falled by over 50 per cent since 1944. The Indus dolphin, while blind, uses echolocation to find its prey in the river.
