ISLAMABAD: Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chief minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Pervez Khattak on Wednesday tendered an unconditional apology to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) over his use of foul language during his election campaign.

The case was being heard by a four-member bench of the ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (r) Sardar Muhammad Raza.

During the hearing, CEC Justice Khan observed that the former CM had uttered objectionable statements regarding women during his public speeches.

The CEC noted, “Khattak used extremely inappropriate words against women.”

Former CM’s counsel Sikandar Bashir told the court, “Khattak appeared on a programme on Geo News where he explained his statements and issued an apology.”

The former CM’s counsel also said that Khattak had “unintentionally uttered the words”.

The commission directed Khattak’s counsel to submit details of the former CM’s media apology.

The hearing was then adjourned and the commission will announce its verdict on August 9.

Earlier last month, the commission had sent notices regarding the use of indecent language during election campaigns to several political figures including Khattak, former National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Moreover, Khattak is being considered by the PTI as a candidate for KP’s top office once more.
