LAHORE: The provincial capital on Thursday experienced another wave of heavy rainfall that started at noon and continued for at least an hour. Routine life was disrupted across the city amid traffic jams and flooded roads as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicted further downpour over the weekend.

According to reports, several areas of Lahore, including Gulberg, Mall Road, Ferozepur Road and Shadman, were lashed by the newly-started spell of monsoon rains, which caused water to stand on the roads.

Accumulated rainwater, all across the metropolis, led to disruptions in the flow of traffic, and gridlocks were observed on all major roads, including Jail Road, Mall Road, Canal Bank Road, Lakshmi Chowk, Lawerance Road and Ferozepur Road to name a few.

Electricity supply in several parts of the city was also affected.

The Met Office has said that monsoon currents are continuously penetrating the upper and eastern parts of the country and are likely to continue in the coming days. It has said the westerly wave is also likely to influence the upper parts of the country around the weekend, which will result in rain-thundershowers with gusty winds at scattered places in Malakand, Hazara, Mardan, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Lahore divisions, Islamabad and Kashmir.

“According to the synoptic situation, a seasonal low is lying over Northwest Balochistan. Weak monsoon currents from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are continuously penetrating parts of the country and are likely to continue during the next 48 hours,” read a statement issued by the PMD.

Rainfall (mm) recorded during the past 24 hours across Punjab was 77 in Malakwal, Lahore (Airport 29, PU 11, City 01), Sahiwal 14, Sialkot (Cantt) 09, Sargodha (City 09, AP 01), Kasur 09, Okara 06, Chakwal 04, Dera Ghazi Khan 02 and 01 each in Murree as well as Bahawalnagar.
