LAHORE: The caretaker government on Monday was requested to provide facilities in jail to Nawaz Sharif in line with his stature as a former prime minister.

The request was made by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif who wrote a letter to Punjab interim Chief Minister Dr Hasan Askari asking the authorities to ensure the same.

He further requested the caretaker government to make sure that all medical facilities are provided to Nawaz Sharif. Moreover, medical checkups were requested to be conducted regularly during his stay in jail. The former Punjab chief minister also asked for permission for Nawaz’s doctor to visit the jail regularly, stating that his elder brother has a heart disease that requires regular checkups.

Earlier on Monday, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed said Nawaz, Maryam and Captain (r) Safdar should be granted the same relief as former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur.

“The court earlier upheld that no candidate should be barred from participating in the electoral process till the July 25 polls are over and this was the basis on which Zardari and Talpur were granted relief,” the former information minister said while speaking to the media outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The deposed prime minister and his daughter Maryam were arrested on July 13 upon their arrival in Lahore, a week after being sentenced to prison in the Avenfield Properties corruption reference.
