‘Police must uphold human rights’

SHARP (Society for Human Rights and Prisoners’ Aid) had organized a one day training workshop titled Role of Police in in upholding Human and Refugee Rights at Police Training Centre, Chung.
Memoona Batool Khan, field manager of SHARP highlighted the role of the police in the current situation of Pakistan. The police have to fight against terrorism for the security of the country and is on the other hand responsible for General Public. She emphasized the need of police officers realizing their responsibilities and work for improving the image of their institution.
Advocate, Zainab Raza Jafri briefly updated the participants about the activities of SHARP and it’s on going projects, which included ALAC, LA and Flood relief activities.
Qaiser Siddiqui (Director SHARP) has given the first session on basic human rights and role of police. He stated that these rights are equal for all human beings unconfined to colour, creed and nationality. It is the duty of the police and other LEAs to work for the protection of the fundamental rights, he said. Salman Kazmi, from the Quaid-e-Azam Law College declared the present laws for Refugees insufficient and stressed the need of amendment in these laws.
Ihsanullah Assistant Protection Officer shared the mandate of UNHCR, he said that Pakistan is hosting more than 1.7million Afghan nations, and the Government of Pakistan has issued them PoR (Proof of Registration) cards. By virtue of these cards they can legally stay and move in Pakistan. Furthermore the registered Afghans are not supposed to be charge under the Foreigners Act as they have been given the right by the Government itself. Meanwhile Sarmad Saeed, Additional Inspector General (Training) encouraged the participants and said that the basic requirement for any job was to enhance knowledge and skills.
