ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani was cleared by the Supreme Court on Tuesday to contest the upcoming elections.
Objections had previously been raised on the former premier’s candidacy by Nisar Ahmed.
“Gillani’s family members are currently serving as directors of two companies whose loans have been written off,” said the petitioner.
The petitioner added that Yousaf Raza Gillani’s wife Fauzia Gillani owned a 12 per cent share in a company she was in charge of.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar asked if candidates could be prevented from contesting under ECP rules if they have a stake in a company.
The petitioner’s representative responded that getting loans written off was declared illegal by the Supreme Court itself.
“Where has the court objected to writing off the loans sanctioned by SBP?” responded Justice Ijazul Hasan.
The case was dismissed and Gillani was allowed to contest in the upcoming elections.
General elections are set to held across the country on July 25.
