LAHORE: Most localities of Lahore on Friday remained submerged in rainwater, giving the city a Venice-like look though without Gandolas, after the provincial capital experienced 24-hour long intermittent rainfall.
Breaking the weeks-long heat spell, rain brought in a wave of delight for few and distress for many as several roads including the main arteries of the city were affected by urban flooding.
As the rain pursued on Friday, eight people were injured due to the collapse of a mosque’s wall. The incident occurred on Link Road in Model Town. Three of the eight people who were crushed under the rubble were provided first aid on the spot, while the remaining five who had sustained more serious injuries were shifted to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.
Earlier on Tuesday, the heavy downpour had similarly resulted in multiple casualties in various areas of the city, with the local media reporting the death of at least one minor who died in a rain-related accident and 14 others were also wounded in similar incidents.
Furthermore, almost all areas of the city suffered power outages for hours at a stretch. Citizens who complained of being inconvenienced were informed that the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) was suffering technical problems.
“Some 150 feeders of LESCO tripped due to the sudden rain,” the company confirmed. Officials at LESCO claimed to have restored electric power later in the day and said that most of the tripped feeders were functional again.
Moreover, monsoon rains in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has restricted tourism and tourist-related activities, with mountaineers having to pause their itineraries until the skies clear up.
A few southern cities in Sindh also received light rainfall, while Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Ratodero and adjoining areas experienced heavy rainfall.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted further rain and drizzle in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, and Bahawalpur until June 4.
