LAHORE: Appeals by the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) against the candidature of  a number of former lawmakers over nonpayment of dues were rejected by two election appellate tribunals on Monday, a local media outlet reported.

The limit of outstanding utility dues that can disqualify a candidate under Article 63 of the Constitution was Rs 10,000, the tribunal observed.

Most of those accused by the NTC for non-payment of dues owed less that the aforementioned amount. On the other hand, many of the lawmakers who the NTC said had to make payments above Rs 10,000 successfully obtained clearance certificates.

The hearings over the matter will continue till June 27.
